Why Performance is More Important Now Than Ever

As we enter the fifth month of the year, I'm sure no one predicted the trouble times we would find ourselves in 2020. More than a few companies were caught off guard by how COVID-19 impacted traffic to their websites. The bad news is that some sites completely crashed due to the spike in traffic. The good news is that this has only highlighted the importance of, and need for, more performance testing. But how will your company approach their performance engineering as we move forward? Do you have a plan in place? Do you even know where to start? Check out the Third Annual PerfGuild online conference taking place on June 1-2 2020, where some of the top performance-engineering experts in the industry will teach you what is working right now. “Perf Guild has probably been the best training money I have ever spent in my 18 years with Deere and 15 years with the DoD.” - Randy Stevenson

June 1 - 2

  • 10 am - 10:50 am

Adding Front-End Performance to the Testing Lifecycle

    Andy Davies

From how long they stay to how much they spend, speed has a critical impact on how visitors engage with our sites. But making a site fast and more importantly, maintaining that speed isn't always easy. In this talk, Andy will explore some of the critical aspects of site speed, why they matter, and how we can measure them. He'll then go on to demonstrate how we can automate their testing and incorporate it into our software lifecycle.

  • 11 am - 11:45 am

KPIs: Painting a cohesive picture of web application performance

    Keshav Vasudevan

Performance testing is a non-functional testing technique performed to determine the system’s parameters in terms of responsiveness and stability under various workloads. In today’s times where digital web applications are being used more than ever, performance testing is a critical part of ensuring optimal customer experience. But what do you measure, especially when working with multiple tech stacks, teams of differing skill sets, and managing various release deadlines? In this talk, we’ll look at some real-life examples to understand the different protocol and browser-based metrics to measure how well your web application’s performance is doing across the UI and API layer.

  • 12:30 pm - 1:20 pm

A code-first approach to performance engineering

    Simon Aronsson

During this talk you'll discover a code-first approach to performance engineering, utilizing scenarios, user journeys, and performance goals to get the most out of your performance testing efforts.

  • 1:30 pm-2:20 pm

    Effective Performance Engineering

    Scott Moore

Discover how to start moving from just a performance tester to thinking like an engineer and getting earlier in the lifecycle. Scott will also share with you a couple of templates that he uses when he does a standard performance testing project. Finally, Scott will talk about the digital experience. This term gets thrown around a lot these days, but not a lot of people really define it. Scott will put some definition around it and help you understand it. This session is great for beginners.

  • 2:30 pm-3:20 pm

Distortion: Why it can make music sound great, and how it’s relevant to making your load tests more realistic

    Paul McLean

Discover how to start moving from just a performance tester to thinking like an engineer and getting earlier in the lifecycle. Scott will also share with you a couple of templates that he uses when he does a standard performance testing project. Finally, Scott will talk about the digital experience. This term gets thrown around a lot these days, but not a lot of people really define it. Scott will put some definition around it and help you understand it. This session is great for beginners.

  • 3:30 pm - 4:20 pm

    Chasing a Java Performance Monster

    Stephen Townshend

In this session, I will share the unfiltered story of identifying a difficult performance issue within a large business-critical Java application. When I attend conferences I always find the real world 'war stories' to be the most engaging, and that is what I presenting. An honest recounting of what happens, and reflections on what was learned and how things could have been done better in the future. This session will involve a live exploration of data, looking at patterns to help identify issues.

  • 10:00 am-10:45 am

Hybrid load testing: the best of testing using protocols and real browsers

    Nicole (Mendoza) van der Hoeven

Should you use a protocol-level load testing tool or a browser-level load testing tool? The answer maybe BOTH. In this session, you'll learn the differences between the two types of tools, why you should consider a hybrid load testing strategy, and how you can use open-source tools to get a more holistic view of your application performance

  • 11:00 am-11:50 am

Shift Right - Digital Experience Analytics

    Jonathon Wright

The biggest challenge for Site Reliability Engineers (SRE) / Performance Engineers (PE) is providing enterprise-grade solutions with open-source tooling. Taking real-world examples from Brexit and A.I. in Retail in this session you will learn how to leverage open-source toolchains such as JMeter, Taurus, Jenkins, TICK Stack, InfluxDB (Time Series Data), Grafana. Demo how to Shift Right by capturing instrumentation from dynamic infrastructure (multi-cloud / Kubernetes / openshift) to generate realistic load profiles with realistic RUM behaviors. Then demo how to generate a Model-Based Performance (MBP) test that mimics real user journeys across multiple ecosystems with realistic test datasets and load profiles.

  • 12:30 pm- 1:20 pm

    Automation Scripts For Performance Testing

    Mohamed Rifad

Discover how to leverage your automation code to do performance testing. Automate a simple API automation scenario using rest assured and Java. Use the same API automation code and do the performance testing. After the session automation engineers will know how to use the same code base for performance testing and automation. One resource will be able to do the automation and performance testing simply without any hassle.

  • 1:30 pm - 2:20 pm

Performance as a Self-Service based on SLIs/SLOs in 5 minutes with Keptn

    Andreas Grabner

Inspired by how companies like Paypal, Panera Bread or Dynatrace have been implementing Performance as a Self-Service we included this use case into Keptn - a CNCF Open Source project. Keptn provides Performance as a Self-Service by automating deployment, testing, and evaluation a new artifact (e.g: container). Keptn queries custom-defined SLIs (Service Level Indicators) from multiple data sources (testing tools, monitoring tools …), automatically validates them against SLOs (Service Level Objectives) and provides this feedback through ChatOps, the Keptn API or the Keptns Bridge. Join this session and learn how to setup Keptn within 5 minutes, how to define SLIs, SLOs and the tests that should be executed and how to make it available to anybody in your organization as a self-service option

  • 2:30 pm - 3:20 pm

    The Beauty of Variance

    James Pulley

Discover why variance is so essential to creating a realistic performance testing scenario.

  • 3:30 pm -4:20 pm

Why good test scripts aren't enough -- Shifting Left and Automation as keys to the future of testing

    Alyson Henry, Matthew Andrus

  • 4:30 pm- 5:20 pm

    Siege: Becoming a Medieval QA

    Saida Yurishi Reyes

Join Yuri for a quick hands-on session using Siege, an HTTP load testing and benchmarking utility. You will discover how easy it is to collect info about "performance" and stress testing. Learn how this simple tool can help "break" the bridge between the Sysadmin and QA worlds. You'll also find out some concepts about how this approach fits into your DevOps efforts.
